‘The Flower of Scotland’ herdenkt de ‘Battle of Bannockburn’ (1314) waar het Schotse leger, onder leiding van Robert the Bruce, het Engelse leger van Edward II versloeg, wat een voorlopig einde van de Engelse bezetting van Schotland betekende. De ‘Flower’ waarvan sprake, is een distel.
